I cut my teeth on Feminist philosophy and the belief that “The personal is political”. For queer people, people of color and women in our current political climate, this has never been more true. With the current administration “legally” attacking reproductive rights, trans rights and stripping away protections of queer people under the guise of “freedom of religion”, it is a terrifying time to be a minority.

I recently saw a post on Twitter of two presumedly heterosexual, white, cis men standing next to each other. One had on a MAGA shirt and the other had on a Bernie Sanders shirt. The tweet read “At the end of the day, always remember that friendship is always more important than politics”. My immediate thought was it must be nice being a white, heterosexual, cis male, because then politics is just something you do for fun and doesn’t affect your life personally.

I’m not one of those “nice, tokenize me, let’s go shopping, assimilate into hetero culture, , we all need to get along, we’re lucky to have gay marriage, gay person”. I tried playing that role when I was younger and it was fucking exhausting. At this point in my life I’m more the “knit my own pussy hat, then stab you in the eye with the needle for being a racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic bigoted asshole, sort of queer”. For me politics is not a game, it is survival. The outcome of elections has a tangible impact on my community, people I love and me. At the end of the day, I am not going to placate bigoted ideas under the ideology of regardless of our differences we can all get along. To have such a relationship with a person who is actively working to destroy your personhood is akin to passive suicide. I have too much self respect to play such games.

I am currently working on a pair of socks. I’m too lazy to take a pic and post, so I will do so next time.
